He wore a pair of T-shirt which was written 'Bad Boy', but he was a 'Good-Boy' model for me of being patient.


この男の子は、’バッド・ボーイ’と書かれたTシャツを着ていましたが、ぼくが絵を描いている間、とても辛抱強く じーっとしてくれた、’グッド・ボーイ’ モデルでした。

My daughter found some friends and this girl is one of her play mates.

This is a sketch of Pandanus fruit.
I've never seen this before and it's huge like Pineapple.
I heard that you can eat some kinds of Pandanus.


これは、パンダナスという木の果実を描いたスケッチです。
ウィキペディアで調べたら、下記のような説明を見つけました。
タコノキ属の樹木の果実で、球形で直径 10 - 12cm、多数の多角形の果実からなる集合果であり、パイナップルに似ている。外果皮は肉質、内果皮は繊維質。典型的には、果実は成熟するにつれ緑から明るいオレンジ色へと変化する。種によっては果実は食用になる。
見つけた子供たちも大喜びでした。

This is a sketch, the view from my camp spot.
This beautiful river is very close to the ocean, so it's a bit salty.
It was a lovely sunny day, and I tanned my skin a lot.


 これは、ぼくのキャンプした場所からの眺めをスケッチしたものです。
この美しい川は、海からほんの目と鼻の先に位置しているので、少し塩っぱいのです。
この日は本当に良く晴れて、大分日焼けをしました。

I went to Brunswick Heads for Camping with my family.
I stayed there for about 5 days and it was wonderful!

I painted quick sketches.
This sketch is the view from a kids play ground in the camp area.
I enjoyed the nice morning breeze while I was painting this tree.



ブランズウイック・ヘッドへキャンプに行ってきました。
家族で5日間くらい過ごしましたが、とても楽しかったです。

スケッチを描いたので、少しずつ紹介しますね。
これは キャンプ場の中にある 子供のプレイエリアからの景色です。
朝の気持ち良い風を楽しみながら描きました。

The Landscapes of my Home Area 4' 熊本の風景 ４’

I painted this picture with water colours.
It took me about couple of hours to finish.


水彩で色付けを施しました。
完成まで 数時間。
労力で言えば下描きの１/２０くらいでしょうか。
風景の細密画による下書きは、もうしばらくやめておきます。

The Landscapes of my Home Area 4 熊本の風景 ４

This is also a drawing only by a ball point pen, compound of the Kumamoto Castle.
I've done a lot of miniature portraits, but I've never done a landscape with this style before.
It took me about 3 weeks to finish.


熊本城境内をボールペンだけで描いてみました。
細密手法の肖像画は沢山手がけてきましたが、風景を細密画で描いたのは初めてです。
人物画とはまた違った難しさがありますが、とても新鮮な試みでした。
仕上がりまで、３週間程かかりました。

The scene from "Paper Moon" 映画 『ペーパームーン』 より

This is the first scene of the motion picture 'Paper Moon'.
The opening image of movies are symbolic, especially this one too.
I love this movie and the performance of little Tatum O'Neil is exquisite.


これは、映画「ペーパー・ムーン」のファーストシーンです。
真っ暗な画面から浮かび上がるこのモノクロのイメージは、とても印象的です。
映画のオープニングシーンは、その作品を象徴しているものですが、特にこの映画にはそれを感じます。
映画を観て、私の娘も「アディ」が大好きになりました。
幼いテータム・オニールの演技が絶妙です。

この絵は、最初から最後までボールペンだけで描いています。

This is a beautiful tree in the area of the Kumamoto Castle.
I wonder how old this tree is.

この絵は、熊本城境内にある美しい大木です。
樹齢はどれくらいなのでしょうか。

The Landscapes of my home Area 2 熊本の風景 ２

This is the Kumamoto Castle.
The castle keep is a concrete reconstruction built in 1960, but several ancillary wooden buildings remain of the original castle (1467?).


県の名所の一つ、熊本城です。
特に熊本城の石垣は、素晴らしいと思います。
武者返しと呼ばれるその石垣の組み方は、下の方は３０度くらいの緩やかな勾配ですが、上に行くに従い反り返り、垂直に近い絶壁になっています。
この石垣を見るだけでも熊本城へ行く価値があります。

This is a quick sketch of my favorite stone bridge called "Tsujun Bridge".
Last year, on the 31st 2013, I saw this bridge on sight for the very first time.
Behind the story of building this bridge is so amazing.

これは、ぼくの大好きな通潤橋という石橋です。
昨年の１２月３１日に生まれて初めて、実際のこの素晴らしい橋を見ることが出来ました。

The Landscapes of my Home Town 3 八代の風景 ３

This is a little Inari Shrine in Myoken Shrine in Yatsushiro.
Inari is the Japanese kami of foxes of agriculture and industry, of general prosperity and worldly success, and one of the principal kami of Shinto.


これは、八代の妙見神社の中にある小さなお稲荷さんです。
向こう側にあった家を省略したら、とてもすっきりした景色に様変わりしました。

The Landscapes of my Home Town 2 八代の風景 ２

This is the entrance of the local heritage called "Shohinken".
It's builｔ in 1688.
It was a very cold winter day.


市内中心の旧八代 城主 松井家のお茶であった「松濱軒」の入り口です。
ここは １６８８年に創設され、現在 国指定の名勝史跡となっています。
八代の出身なのに、ぼくは何と初めて中に入りました。 お恥ずかしい限りです。

これからは、日本へ帰省する度に 故郷の美しさに触れていきたいと思います。
この日は、とても寒い１２月の中旬でした。

The Landscapes of my Home Town 八代の風景

I painted a small temple of my home town, Yatsushiro.
Usually, I hate yellow bamboo, but it suits this temple and looks beautiful.

故郷 八代市にある小さなお寺の絵を描いてみました。
正教寺（しょうきょうじ）というお寺です。
 ぼくは、黄色い竹はあまり好きではありませんが、それがどうしてか このお寺にはとても似合っていて、色彩がとても綺麗です。

A Self-Portrait ２ 自画像制作 ２

Hi, I'm back.

Here is the finished painting of my portrait.
It's completely different from the draft, isn't it?
My daughter was really shocked, she raised her voice and got angry with this painting.
What do you think?

Normally, artists doesn't say much about their own art works, but this time I would like to tell you a little about the story behind it.


To tell the truth, I live while being hurt and being almost discouraged.

Sometimes I get scared and I feel like  I'm close to losing all hope,

but I'm not the only one I guess.

Let's have the courage to share our feelings with a smile and do the "Happy Hug".


11. 3. 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake changed my feelings about life completely.
My sensible mates in Australia cheered me up and gave Japan support.
I was deeply grateful for this and it gave me a renewed sense of what it meant to me to be Japanese.

On that day, a woman was swept away by a huge tsunami.
She was sinking, gradually losing consciousness. Looking up at the sunlight from under the water, she thought "I'm dieing..." and was on the point of giving up.
At that moment, she recalled her son's face and she decided that she would survive, no matter what it took.
She finally escaped from the water and after that she was able see her lovely son again.
I was moved and inspired by this story, so I decided to use it as the theme of my painting.

Also, to my family, I usually find it hard to say thank you or I'm sorry, but I often say it with a 'Happy Hug'.

こんにちは。

今回は、完成画をご覧いただきます。
前回の自画像の下絵からは、想像もつかなかったかもしれません。
ぼくの娘がこれを見た時は相当ショックだったようで、 声を上げて怒りました。
皆さんのご感想はいかがですか？

本来 作品には説明があまりあってはなりませんが、これから少しお書きする内容を 鑑賞の手掛かりにしていただければと思います。


本当は　ぼくは傷ついて 挫けそうになりながら生きている

怖くて希望を失ってしまいそうになる時もある

でも　そうなのは ぼくだけじゃない

勇気を出して、笑顔で気持ちの分かち合い（Happy Hug）をしよう。


２０１１年 ３月 １１日の東日本大震災は、ぼくの生き方を変える出来事でした。
オーストラリアの心ある方々からの励ましは、深い感謝と同時に ぼくの日本人としての自覚を新たにしました。

震災当日、津波に呑みこまれたある被災者の方の話です。
散々もがき苦しみ、水中から見える太陽の光を眺めながら、段々と意識が薄れ『もう、だめだ・・・』と諦めかけた時、ふと小学生の息子さんの顔を思い出してハッと我に返り、最後の気力を 振り絞って自力と周りの援助で九死に一生を得、無事に生還されました。
その方は、後に笑顔で息子さんとの再会を果たしたそうですが、ぼくはこの話に 娘を持つ親として自分を重ね合わせ、とても心が動かされました。
そして、今回 この自画像を描く際の一つの象徴にしようと思いました。

さらに個人的には、普段は面と向かってなかなか言えない家族へ、日頃の感謝とおわびの気持ちも込めて筆を取りました。

A Self-Portrait １ 自画像制作 １

Hi, it's been a bit long time since we last spoke.  How are you?

This time I'll show you my own portrait.
I tried many different angles, but I finally decided with a straight face position of my head.

The size of this art work is  122cm×183cm (48"×72").
This is unusually big size for me, but it's a quite normal size when you hang up in the art gallery.
I made an entry for "Archibald Prize in 2014" with it.

The top image draft is drawn by pencils.
The title is "Happy Hugs".
I wanted to share our feelings with my dearest people.

I'll show you a finish image of my art work next time.



お久しぶりです。　皆さんお元気ですか？

最近取り掛かった自画像を今回ご紹介いたします。
前回、三面鏡で自画像を描いてみようと思い 試してみましたが、なかなかうまく行かず、やはり正面のアングルから描くことにいたしました。

作品のサイズは、今までのぼくの作品からは珍しい、１２２ｃｍ×１８３ｃｍの大判です。
それでもギャラリーなどに展示する場合は、あまり大きく感じない通常サイズかもしれませんね。
この作品で、豪州の大きなアート賞への参加をいたします。

上の画像は 下絵の状態ですが、 ２B、HB、９Hの鉛筆を使用しています。
タイトルは、"Happy Hugs"　としました。
大切な人たちとハグをして 気持ちを共有したいと思ったのが、制作のきっかけです。

次回は、完成画をご紹介いたします。
