The scene from "Paper Moon"

This is the first scene of the motion picture 'Paper Moon'.
The opening image of movies are symbolic, especially this one too.
I love this movie and the performance of little Tatum O'Neil is exquisite.

A Self-Portrait 2

Hi, I'm back.

Here is the finished painting of my portrait.
It's completely different from the draft, isn't it?
My daughter was really shocked, she raised her voice and got angry with this painting.
What do you think?

Normally, artists doesn't say much about their own art works, but this time I would like to tell you a little about the story behind it.

To tell the truth, I live while being hurt and being almost discouraged.

Sometimes I get scared and I feel like  I'm close to losing all hope,

but I'm not the only one I guess.

Let's have the courage to share our feelings with a smile and do the "Happy Hug".

11. 3. 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake changed my feelings about life completely.
My sensible mates in Australia cheered me up and gave Japan support.
I was deeply grateful for this and it gave me a renewed sense of what it meant to me to be Japanese.

On that day, a woman was swept away by a huge tsunami.
She was sinking, gradually losing consciousness. Looking up at the sunlight from under the water, she thought "I'm dieing..." and was on the point of giving up.
At that moment, she recalled her son's face and she decided that she would survive, no matter what it took.
She finally escaped from the water and after that she was able see her lovely son again.
I was moved and inspired by this story, so I decided to use it as the theme of my painting.

Also, to my family, I usually find it hard to say thank you or I'm sorry, but I often say it with a 'Happy Hug'.

"Happy Hugs"
121.8cm×182.8cm (48"×72")
pencils, Sumi (Japanese Ink), water colour, acrylic colour on stretched canvas with gesso and aqua primer.  Fixative for water-colour for a fixing solution.

(Happy Hugs)

Hi, it's been a bit long time since we last spoke.  How are you?

This time I'll show you my own portrait.
I tried many different angles, but I finally decided with a straight face position of my head.

The size of this art work is  122cm×183cm (48"×72").
This is unusually big size for me, but it's a quite normal size when you hang up in the art gallery.
I made an entry for "Archibald Prize in 2014" with it.

The top image draft is drawn by pencils.
The title is "Happy Hugs".
I wanted to share our feelings with my dearest people.

I'll show you a finish image of my art work next time.

It's autumn in Brisbane.
This season is very short in Queensland in Australia.
Some people start to call this season winter already.

I watched a movie the other day and the title is "Seven Samurai".
It was so hard to find out the right scene which is suitable for drawing.
However, I found a good one at last.
It is of a very famous Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune.
He played one of the seven samurai whose name was Kikuchiyo.
In this film, the personality of  Kikuchiyo is very impressive.
I like the scene in which one of the samurai teased Kikuchiyo, calling him "Lord Kikuchiyo".
If you have not watched this movie, it's definitely worth watching before you die!

I used ballpoint pen and black watercolour with wash on paper.

Profound Portrait

Hi, how are you?
Spring has come in Japan, and the short Autumn is just around the corner here in Brisbane.

I finished the painting that I was ordered the other day.
I managed to add a dog to a picture of a mother and son.
I hope it looks natural.

I love to paint portraits.
We (as humans) are always sharing our feelings, aren't we?
As our sharing becomes closer or deeper, I think our happiness grows.
If I draw someone really hard and try to approach, their features or expressions (sometimes it goes well and sometimes it goes bad!), this hard working is always worthwhile for me.
Because painting portraits is almost like communication (non-verbal) for me.
When I think I am successful and feel I can approach to the person with my painting, I am so happy because it's like we are sharing our feelings with the painted person.

On the other hand, good portraits are always reflected by the painter's feelings and thoughts.
I would rather say they are no longer portraits.
The great portraits that I like painted by Klimt or Modigliani, they don't have "a figure painting" feel any more.

My best portraits are "figure painting", but my nude drawing is not this way and I hope to create everything in an organic manner in the near future.

When I draw/paint someone, I prefer his/her profile most of the time, not exchange looks with someone.
I never try draw/paint my own portrait with this way.
Maybe next time I'm gonna try this with a triple mirror (I do not have any at the moment!).
.
